Care Assistant, Relief Cover (Zero Hours Contract), £6.60 – £8.20 p/h

JOB SUMMARY:

  • This role is considered a ‘care worker’ within the meaning of the Care Standards Act
  • To assist the Home Managers / Nurse in Charge, in the confidential co-ordination of all services to the Service Users.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Non NVQ Care Assistant

To carry out duties at all times in the best interests of the Service User with due regard to respect, dignity and within best practice guidelines.
To supervise individuals within the Home, ensuring that they are fully involved and participate in the Homes’ activities, undertaking a ‘person centred’ approach.
To record and observe the progress or decline of individuals within the Home and notify senior staff of their progress.
To maintain good professional relationships with staff, relatives and other professionals.
To care for individual’s property, undertaking any aspect of Home management within the Home as required, e.g. light domestic work, participating in meal preparation, laundry if required.
To play an active part in promoting good public relations within the locality, so as to increase public awareness of, and support for, the aims and objectives of the Home as a whole.
To report immediately any incident of ill-treatment, verbal, physical, financial, mental or neglect to the Home Manager / Deputy.
To report any complaint made by individuals at the Home, or on behalf of them by relatives, friends, to the Home Manager / Deputy.
To assist in the development of all practical skills as used in shopping, visiting the doctor and dentist. This also includes areas of self-care as required plus support to maximise domestic skills or independent living skills.
To participate in the development and implementation of opportunities for recreation, socialisation, holidays, in line with the concept of normalisation.
To promote Service User self-advocacy.
To attend staff meetings, discuss and review training progress and the management of the Home in supervision. You are also required to attend basic mandatory training (e.g. induction, fire training, manual handling, food hygiene, health and safety, first aid, clinical training pertinent to the home, POVA, Whistle blowing). There is an expectation that staff attend staff meetings and some non-mandatory training events as part of their role and development in their own time.
To be familiar with all the Home’s, health and safety regulations, and ensure that they are strictly observed and practiced and mandatory training is attended.
To inform the Home Manager / Deputy of faulty equipment and any other materials that may need replacement or repair.
To attend relevant courses in order to develop a personal skill-base.
To follow agreed reactive management plans and thus to maintain a low response to clients challenging needs, using the CPI de-escalation model taught at the Home.
To act for a designated group of Service Users as a Key worker.

Care Assistants:
Will always work under the direction of more senior or experienced staff (although they may accompany clients in the home / community on a 1:1, dependent on client risk assessments).
Will not take responsibility for the administrating of medication within the home.
Will at no time have the sole responsibility for the home.

NVQ 2 Qualified Care Assistant

The job description of Support Worker – Grade 2, includes the above responsibilities plus:-
To take Key worker responsibility for Service Users.
To assist in the devising and carrying out of person centred programmes of care.
To complete Key worker reports as required.
To maintain professional communication with any significant other in the client life and to refer any queries in relation to the condition of the Service User to the Nurse in Charge at all times without hesitation.
To confidentially and effectively maintain clients files where appropriate and where delegated by the Nurse in Charge.
To effectively and confidentially manage any change-over in Key worker role where requested to by Nurse in Charge.
To supervise and mentor junior Care Assistants to the standards required at the Home and as detailed in above Job Description and take an active role in leading everyday activities which promotes SU independence, working closely with the Activities supervisor at all times.
To ensure the living environment is always clean, clutter free and free from odours and well maintained within the confines of health and safety.

NVQ 3 Qualified Care Assistant

The job description of Support Worker – Grade 3, includes the above responsibilities for Grade 1 and Grade 2, plus:-
Team leading as required by senior staff
Attendance at Health and Safety Meetings and adopting an advocate role in health and safety within the Department.
Take Blood Pressures, Blood sugars, weighing Service Users, and records are ensure all areas are free from hazards e.g. wheelchairs and pad storage. 
Ensure care assistants are engaging Service Users in activities.
Be responsible as allocated by Home Managers for stock monitoring
Train other care staff and act as a mentor and role model to other staff.
Also, support other staff members who are undertaking NVQ study.

This is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities, and the past holder will be expected to perform other duties of a similar nature and level of expertise. Support Workers may undertake duties detailed under Grades above their current grade due to personal interest or as a training opportunity. This job description will be reviewed by mutual agreement with the post-holder and will reflect the views of the post-holder and take into considerations any service developments.
PLEASE NOTE
Those members of staff studying for their NVQ 2 qualification should be working towards the NVQ 2 Care Assistant Job description. Similarly those NVQ 2 qualified members of staff who are training towards NVQ 3 should be working towards the NVQ 3 Care Assistant Job Description.

Health and Safety at work

The post holder is required to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself/herself and other persons who may be affected by their action or omission at work and will be responsible for the Health and Safety in their units, participating in audits and H&S meetings as required.

Co-operate with the employer in ensuring that all statutory and other requirements are complied with.

The post holder has a responsibility to comply with the Data Protect Act 1998 and maintain confidentiality of staff, patients and the business.

The Home is responsible for ensuring that the services for Service Users in its care meet the highest standards.  Equally, it is responsible for ensuring that staff do not abuse their official position, gain or benefit their family or friends.

Effective prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections has to be embedded into everyday practice and applied consistently by everyone. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.
